What is it and why do you need it?

Portable appliance testing is the name of a process in the UK and other countries by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety. The formal term for this is “in-service inspections and testing of electrical equipment.”

Electricity at work regulations 1989

The electricity at work regulations requires that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. It states that every employer shall make a suitable assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees to which they are exposed whilst at work and the risk to the health and safety of persons not in their employment. Regular PAT testing helps companies adhere to these regulations.

Testing Frequency

Some work environments are more extreme than others and therefore the frequency of each test changes. For example, most site tools require testing every three months whereas IT equipment in an office can be tested every three years. This can all be done during the quotation process and can ultimately save a lot of money for some business.

Proof of Testing

Every item tested is labeled with the next test date clearly marked and any failed items will be addressed with the appropriate person whilst on the job. Once completed, you will be provided with a full inventory list and a certificate to show the appropriate parties and display within the business.
